Coastal Protection

"The coastal zone...is not a definitive boundary... "

The shallow waters close to the coastline, the coastal zone, are particularly important because they are the most biologically productive parts of the oceans. Although it's called a zone it is not a definitive boundary. Different management issues can overlap and blur the zone's edges.

Increasing pressures on the coastal zone means that there are inevitable conflicts. Management policies need to take full account of these to keep them to a minimum and look for ways to reduce damage to the environment. Find out how DEEM aims to safeguard the river banks and coast of the Dart by reading this extract from the Management Plan.

The full original plan can be downloaded at the end of the extract, however the latest 2006-2011 Periodic Review Dart Estuary Environmental Management Plan (EMP) can also be downloaded here. It is closely linked with the Management Plan for the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a five year horizon.

The plan's guiding principles provide the context in which the aims are achieved and the actions carried out.

  • Guiding Principles

  • To ensure that coastal protection and flood defence proposals for the area take full account of sustainability and adopt soft engineering solutions wherever practicable.
  • To preserve the visual integrity of the Dart Estuary landscape through land management policies
  • Strategic Objectives

  • To develop a comprehensive and co-ordinated land management policy for the estuary
  • To stabilise the banks of the river, particularly in the upper reaches, having due regard to the natural processes of erosion and accretion
  • To ensure that coastal protection and flood defence proposals for the Dart Estuary are developed on sustainable principles and in sympathy with the coastal defence strategy for the region
  • To ensure that coastal protection and flood defence proposals for the Dart Estuary are developed on sustainable principles and in sympathy with the coastal defence strategy for the region
  • To protect and actively conserve critical areas of landscape or wildlife habitat
