Conserve and Sustain
Local Economy
Fishing has provided a livelihood for Dartmouth folk for centuries

The Dart Estuary needs to thrive economically, as well as environmentally. These two aspects are not necessarily in conflict and, properly managed, can be mutually supportive. There is strong evidence that in the Dart Estuary people choose to live, work or visit the region because of the quality of the environment. To be sustainable over the long term, the local economy needs to be vibrant and fully integrated with the needs of the environment.
The agriculture and fishing industries form part of the character of the area but in recent years, they have found it tough economically. At the same time, tourism and recreation is on the increase. We need to sustain a mixed, balanced economy that recognises the importance of the environment within the system. Find out how DEEM aims to support the local economy by reading the extract at the bottom of this page that has been taken from the Management Plan. The full plan can be downloaded at the end of the extract.
