The River Dart and its surrounding area have been inhabited for many centuries. Dartmoor has been farmed for over 4000 years. Totnes was a trading port in Viking times and the ancient stannery town of Ashburton dates back the better part of a thousand years. Monastic settlement at Buckfastleigh is recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and the Port of Dartmouth has, over many centuries, been the scene of naval and commercial activities.

These traditions are still reflected in the local community events of today. Over time the area has been transformed into a rich cultural landscape of farmlands and market towns, green lanes, hedgerows and archaeological remains that is still highly valued today.

Find out how DEEM aims to support the history, archaeology and cultural heritage of the Dart by reading this extract from the Management Plan.

The plan's guiding principles provide the context in which the aims are achieved and the actions carried out.

The full original plan can be downloaded at the end of the extract, however the latest 2006-2011 Periodic Review Dart Estuary Environmental Management Plan (EMP) can also be downloaded here. It is closely linked with the Management Plan for the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a five year horizon.
