Landrover safari trips help visitors get close to nature in the beautiful landscape of Dartmoor

The Dart Estuary, lying within the South Hams, is one of the country's prime destinations for 'Green Tourism'. Green Tourism promotes enjoyment of the natural environment in a way that has a minimal impact upon that environment. In the Dart Estuary we want to give visitors the best experience they can have but at the same time avoid putting more pressure on the environment.

The best ways of doing this are by lengthening the visitor season and improving the facilities offered. The river itself presents many opportunities. It could be a major route for visitor traffic, at present not yet fully exploited. Within the river, and around the river, are areas of production of high quality local food products such as shellfish, migratory fish, wines, cheeses, etc., all of which help to promote local identity and local reputation for excellence.

Dart Estuary Environmental Management (DEEM) works with local traders and trade associations to help promote a vibrant, healthy and prosperous estuary.

Find out how DEEM aims to support tourism in the Dart by reading this extract from the Management Plan. The full plan can be downloaded at the end of the extract.

The plan's guiding principles provide the context in which the aims are achieved and the actions carried out.

The full original plan can be downloaded at the end of the extract, however the latest 2006-2011 Periodic Review Dart Estuary Environmental Management Plan (EMP) can also be downloaded here. It is closely linked with the Management Plan for the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a five year horizon.
